"A gender-just society is built one conversation, one camp, one girl at a time."

— Sankar Nath Mitra, Co-Founder
Who we are

A women's rights organisation with two decades of grassroots work.

Sutanutir Sakhya is a women's rights organisation founded in 2002 in Kolkata, committed to building a gender-equal, gender-just and violence-free society.

Sutanutir Sakhya was founded in 2002 by Madhupurna Ghosh and Sankar Nath Mitra in Kolkata with the intent to facilitate and promote developmental issues of women, children and the elderly — irrespective of caste, community, religion or economic status.

What makes us unique is our approach of addressing women's empowerment through law. We believe law is an instrument of social change and can be used to realise the human rights of women. The idea was born out of a mission to create a gender-equal, violence-free society where every woman can live a life of dignity.

Who We Work With

Our field interventions focus on three highly vulnerable groups.

Adolescent Girls

At risk of dropping out of school, early marriage, and deprivation of opportunity — we help them claim their right to education, safety and leadership.

Single Women

Widowed, separated or abandoned women facing social isolation and economic hardship — we help them rebuild with dignity and independence.

Domestic Workers

An invisible workforce we support with legal literacy, collective bargaining skills, and protection against exploitation.
